Clear aligners are ubiquitous for their cosmetic benefits. Placing a clear aligner over your teeth will all but cause it to vanish, as it blends in with your teeth. The aligners are transparent so you can see right through them, making the aligners unnoticeable unless you’re looking for them.
One of the biggest drawbacks of traditional braces is that bonding metal to the teeth for long periods prevents these surfaces from being cleaned and food particles can build up between them.
When the brackets are removed at the end of treatment, patients often complain of discoloration or white spots where the braces were. Since Invisalign is removable, we can avoid these problems entirely.
Food particles and bacteria won’t get trapped because you remove your aligners before eating. Since you can clean all of the surfaces of your teeth unobstructed, this also means no tooth discoloration or cavities.
Because Invisalign doesn’t need to be adjusted as braces do, you don’t need to attend frequent appointments. You can also enjoy the freedom of eating a restriction-free diet and taking your aligners out any time you need to.
Braces exert significant pressure on the teeth and the metal brackets and wires can cause damage or injury to the inside of your mouth if they break or become damaged. With plastic aligners, you don’t need to worry about this because there are no sharp edges. The aligners cushion your teeth and are much more gentle even though they still exert force.
One of our dentists will examine your teeth to assess the severity of your misalignment. This will help us determine if Invisalign is right for you and if you will require attachments. Attachments are buttons made of composite resin that are bonded to the teeth and anchor your aligners to help them do their job.
We will take digital scans and impressions of your teeth and send them to the Invisalign lab.
Using your scans and impressions, we can create a 3D model of your teeth on our computer software to digitally plan your treatment. This allows us to plan your tooth movements and show you the comparison of your original alignment and what it will look like at the end.
Your aligners are fabricated in an outside dental lab after approving your treatment plan. It will take a few weeks to create your aligners but once we receive them, you can come back to pick them up.
You will need to wear your aligners every day for at least 22 hours. They will be switched every 2 weeks and you will need to attend regular checkups every 6 weeks. During these checkups, we will provide you with additional aligners.
Once you’ve completed your treatment, we will create a retainer based on new impressions of your final alignment. You will need to wear this to maintain your new alignment.
No, there are no food restrictions during Invisalign treatment. However, you will need to remember to remove the aligners before eating and drinking. Your aligners should not be worn when drinking hot beverages, flavored beverages, or eating any food.
Once the aligners are out, you are free to consume what you want. You will need to brush and floss your teeth before putting the aligners back in.
You’re a good candidate for Invisalign if you:
We don’t recommend Invisalign for children, young teens, patients who can’t commit to wearing their aligners or keeping them clean, patients with oral health problems, or patients with severe orthodontic issues.
